Witch’s cauldron with glow-in-the-dark goo

Ingredients

  • 1 large round loaf of bread
  • 1 egg, beaten
  • 100g bag of poppy seeds
  • 1 kg butternut squash pieces
  • 1 onion, coarsely chopped
  • 2 garlic cloves, peeled
  • 400g can of tomato cream soup
  • 1 tsp ground cumin
  • 1 tsp ground coriander
  • 2 tbsp chili sauce, we used Lingham’s
  • extra toasted flatbread, sausage mummies (see what goes with it) and cucumber sticks for dipping

Preparation steps

  1. Cut the top edge off the loaf.
  2. Remove the soft bread from the center of the base, leaving the crust about 2.5 cm thick all around.
  3. Cut the bread into pieces to serve for toasting, or simply let the kids pull it out with their fingers.
  4. Preheat oven to 200°C/180°C fan/gas 6.
  5. Brush the outside of the large “cauldron” and the lid all over with beaten egg.
  6. Roll the cauldron crust and lid in poppy seeds to cover – tipping them onto a large plate first makes this easier.
  7. Place on baking sheets, poppy seed side up, and bake for 10 minutes.
  8. Set aside until you are ready to celebrate.
  9. Bring a large pot of salted water to the boil.
  10. Add the butternut squash, onion and garlic and then simmer until the squash and onion are soft.
  11. Drain really well.
  12. Place the soup, spices, chili sauce and some spices in a food processor or blender.
  13. Blend until smooth (or return to pot and blend with an immersion blender).
  14. Put aside.
  15. Shortly before the guests arrive, heat the dip in the microwave or in a pot – it should be nice and hot.
  16. Place in the bread kettle.
  17. Put the lid on and carry it to the party table where you can dip it into the sausage mummies (see pairings), pickle sticks, and more toasted bread.
  18. And when the dip disappears, you can start eating the cauldron too!
