Ingredients

  • Sunflower oil for greasing
  • 2-3 small crisp apples
  • toasted chopped pecans (optional)
  • melted dark chocolate (optional)
  • 200g golden powdered sugar
  • 50g golden syrup
  • ½ tsp white wine vinegar
  • piece of butter
  • 1 tbsp double cream

Preparation steps

  1. Grease a large metal baking sheet, spatula, and tablespoon with oil.

  2. To make the toffee, place the sugar, syrup, vinegar and butter in a small saucepan and heat gently until the sugar has dissolved.

  3. In the meantime, cut the apples into rough slices about 1 cm thick.

  4. Insert a lollipop or wooden skewer through the edge of each apple slice so that the tip reaches the center. If your skewers are very long, cut them in half before using.

  5. Once the sugar has dissolved, increase the heat and bring the mixture to a boil.

  6. Insert a candy thermometer and allow to bubble until the temperature reaches 350°F.

  7. Quickly remove the toffee mixture from the heat and stir in the cream with the oiled spatula.

  8. Let the toffee cool and thicken slightly.

  9. Hold the apple skewers one at a time over the pan and spoon some of the toffee over the top to thickly coat one side of the slice.

  10. Allow any excess toffee to drip off the edges of the disk.

  11. Place the coated apple slices, toffee side up, on the prepared baking sheet.

  12. If desired, sprinkle some chopped pecans over the toffee-coated apple slices.

  13. If the toffee in the pan becomes too solid, heat it gently to melt it again.

  14. Let the apple slices cool until they harden.

  15. If desired, drizzle some dark chocolate over the hardened apple slices.

  16. Allow the chocolate to set and then enjoy.

Health Benefits of Toffee Apple Pops

While eating sweet treats usually makes you feel guilty about your health, eating toffee apple pops offers some surprising benefits. These delicious treats combine the crunch of small, crunchy apples with a golden toffee coating, making them a favorite for kids and adults. Let’s explore the health benefits of this tasty treat.

1. Apples – a nutritional powerhouse

One of the main ingredients in Toffee Apple Pops are fresh, small, crunchy apples. These fruits are a nutritional powerhouse, packed with essential vitamins, minerals and fiber. They are a great source of vitamin C, which boosts the immune system and promotes healthy skin. In addition, apples are rich in fiber, which aids digestion and promotes satiety.

2. Pecans – a nutty boost

While optional, adding toasted chopped pecans to your toffee apple pops can provide an extra health boost. Pecans are packed with nutrients like healthy fats, vitamins, minerals and antioxidants. They are particularly high in monounsaturated fats, which have been linked to a reduced risk of heart disease. Pecans also contain fiber and protein, making them a filling and nutritious addition to your treat.

3. Dark chocolate – a heart-healthy treat

The melted dark chocolate used to coat the toffee apple pops can add a touch of decadence and even some health benefits. Dark chocolate is rich in antioxidants called flavonoids, which are thought to have various health benefits. These flavonoids have been shown to support heart health by improving blood flow, reducing inflammation, and lowering blood pressure. For maximum health benefits, it is important to choose dark chocolate with a high cocoa content.

4. Golden Powdered Sugar and Golden Syrup – Moderation is key

The toffee coating consists of golden powdered sugar and golden syrup, which contribute to the sweet and sticky texture of the toffee apple pops. Although these ingredients do not offer any significant health benefits, it is important to enjoy them in moderation. Excessive consumption of sugary foods can lead to weight gain, dental problems and an increased risk of chronic diseases. Remember to enjoy these treats as an occasional treat rather than a regular part of your diet.

5. White wine vinegar – a spicy option

A small amount of white wine vinegar is added to the toffee mixture to add a spicy touch. Although vinegar does not provide any direct health benefits, it has been shown to have some potential health effects. In small amounts, it can help regulate blood sugar levels, improve digestion and promote satiety. However, the amount used in this recipe is minimal, so the health effects are likely negligible.

6. Double Cream – Enjoy in moderation

Adding a tablespoon of double cream to the toffee mixture adds richness and creaminess. However, double cream is high in saturated fats and should therefore be consumed in moderation. While small amounts of saturated fat can be part of a balanced diet, excessive intake can contribute to weight gain and increase the risk of certain health conditions. Enjoy these toffee apple pops sparingly to keep your saturated fat intake under control.

While toffee apple pops may not be the healthiest food choice, they do offer some surprising health benefits when enjoyed in moderation. Apples, pecans, dark chocolate and vinegar all contribute important nutrients and potential health benefits. Remember to enjoy these delicious treats as an occasional treat to maintain a balanced and healthy diet.
