Health Benefits of Super-Simple Fruitcake

Fruit cakes are a popular treat, especially at Christmas time. However, they are often associated with high sugar and calorie content, making them not the healthiest option. But what if we told you that you could treat yourself to a delicious fruit cake and reap health benefits at the same time? The super easy fruit cake recipe we share here does just that!

1. Olive oil

Using olive oil in this recipe instead of butter or margarine provides several health benefits. Olive oil is a monounsaturated fat, meaning it can help lower cholesterol and reduce the risk of heart disease.

2. Light brown muscovado sugar

Unlike refined white sugar, light brown muscovado sugar is less processed and retains more of its natural molasses content. It provides a richer taste and contains some minerals such as calcium, potassium and iron.

3 eggs

Eggs are a great source of protein that helps build and repair tissue. They also contain important vitamins and minerals such as vitamin B12, vitamin D and selenium.

4. Plain flour

Using regular flour instead of refined flour gives the fruit cake a little more fiber. This can aid digestion, promote a healthy gut, and help regulate blood sugar levels.

5. Ground cinnamon and allspice

The combination of ground cinnamon and allspice not only adds warmth and flavor to the fruitcake, but also brings potential health benefits. Cinnamon has anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties, while allspice is said to aid digestion.

6. Orange and lemon

Adding orange and lemon juice not only improves the taste, but also provides a dose of vitamin C, which boosts the immune system and supports overall skin health.

7. Mixed dried fruits

Dried fruits like raisins, cranberries and cherries are full of natural sugars, fiber, vitamins and minerals. They offer a healthy alternative to artificial sweeteners and also contribute to the overall texture and flavor of the fruitcake.

8. Apricot jam

Apricot jam, which is used to glaze the fruit cake, provides the fruity sweetness. Apricots are known for their high levels of fiber, potassium and antioxidants, which promote heart health and aid digestion.

In summary, while fruitcakes are typically associated with indulgence, our Super-Simple Fruitcake recipe contains several ingredients that offer some health benefits. So you can enjoy this delicious treat without feeling guilty, knowing that it also offers some nutritional value!
