Steak with pizzaiola sauce

  • 2 tbsp olive oil
  • 300-350g/10oz-12oz beef steak, e.g. B. Beef fillet, rump steak or ribeye steak, about 2 cm/¾ inch thick
  • 250 g vine tomatoes or 400 g chopped canned tomatoes
  • 2-3 fat cloves of garlic, chopped
  • 2 tbsp extra virgin olive oil
  • a pinch of dried oregano or marjoram
  • 6 large basil leaves, roughly torn

Preparation steps

  1. Make the sauce.
    1. If using fresh tomatoes, chop them coarsely.
    2. Put the tomatoes in a pan with the garlic, oil, oregano or marjoram and season to taste.
    3. Bring the mixture to a boil and then simmer for 10 minutes, stirring occasionally.
    4. Remove the pot from the heat and stir in the basil. Put aside.
  • When ready to serve, heat a heavy-based skillet until high heat is felt.
  • Brush both sides of the steak with oil and season each side.
  • Place the steak in the center of the pan and turn the heat to medium-high.
  • Cook the steak for 6 minutes, turning halfway through, until medium rare. For a medium steak, cook for a total of 7-8 minutes. For a well-done steak, cook for 8-10 minutes.
  • Remove the steak from the pan and place it on a warm platter.
  • Let the steak rest for 5 minutes.
