  • 700g potatoes, cut into 3cm cubes
  • 1 small onion, thinly sliced
  • 25g butter
  • 200g smoked mackerel
  • 2 tbsp chopped dill
  • 150 ml double cream
  • 100 ml fish broth
  • 2 tbsp creamed horseradish

Preparation steps

  1. Preheat the oven to 200°C/180°C fan/gas 6.
  2. Cook potatoes and onions in boiling salted water until almost tender, 6-7 minutes.
  3. Drain potatoes and onions well.
  4. Grease a 20 x 20 cm baking dish with a little butter.
  5. Arrange the potatoes in the greased baking dish.
  6. Break the smoked mackerel into rough pieces, making sure to remove the skin and bones.
  7. Tuck the mackerel pieces in and around the potatoes.
  8. Scatter the dill over the potatoes and mackerel.
  9. Whisk together the cream, stock and horseradish and season with salt and pepper.
  10. Pour the cream mixture over the potatoes and mackerel in the baking dish.
  11. Spread the remaining butter on the mold.
  12. Bake the dish for 20-25 minutes until golden brown.
  13. If desired, serve the smoked mackerel and potato casserole with a green salad.
