Ingredients
- edible food coloring paste (we used Claret and Party Green)
- 200g ready-to-roll icing
- some solid vegetable fat for rolling out (see know-how below)
- edible gloss (we used a shimmery pink), optional
- edible glitter (we used bright pink), optional
Tip
Expertise
Use a thin layer of solid white vegetable shortening, such as: B. Trex to roll out the icing and prevent it from sticking. Powdered sugar dries the icing too quickly and makes the colors look chalky.
Preparation steps
- Start with the roses. Knead some of the color paste into 150 g of icing until the mixture is light and uniform.
- Break the dough into three balls and then add a little more color to two balls, creating three different depths of color. Store under cling film.
- Rub a very thin layer of grease onto a smooth work surface.
- Roll out one of the icing balls thinly, about 1-2mm, then cut it into a rectangle about 8 x 20cm.
- Cut a 1cm strip of the icing widthwise, leaving the rest covered.
- Gently roll the icing up and around.
- To achieve a more realistic rose look, start by rolling the rose at a slight angle so that the outer edge of the finished rose extends further past the center.
- About 2cm from the end, start bringing the end of the icing down and down to form a pretty rosebud.
- Press into shape and then cut or pinch off the bottom. Let rest until firm, at least 1 hour.
- Repeat with the rest of the icing.
- For the leaves, color the remaining icing green.
- Cut off small pea-sized pieces, roll into balls and flatten slightly.
- Pinch one end to create a leaf shape.
- Let dry.
- Once the roses are dry and firm, dust a little gloss onto each rose using a brush or your fingertip.
- Sprinkle with glitter if necessary.
- Place the roses on the cupcakes in groups of three, followed by three leaves.
- For 12 cakes you need 36 leaves and roses.

Rich in antioxidants
The edible food coloring paste used to make simple sugar roses contains natural antioxidants from fruits and vegetables. These antioxidants help neutralize harmful free radicals in the body, reducing the risk of chronic disease and promoting overall health.
Low calories
Easy sugar roses are made with a small amount of ready-to-roll frosting, which is relatively low in calories compared to other frosting options. Using a thin layer of solid vegetable shortening for rolling instead of powdered sugar reduces the calorie content even further. This makes plain sugar roses a good choice for anyone watching their calorie intake.
Gluten free option
For those with gluten intolerances or those on a gluten-free diet, plain sugar roses offer a safe and enjoyable alternative to traditional cake decorations. Ready-made glazes are often gluten-free and therefore also suitable for people with celiac disease or gluten intolerance.
Eye-catching and mood-enhancing
The vibrant edible food coloring paste in various shades of burgundy and party green, used to make simple sugar roses, adds a pop of color to any dessert. Research suggests that bright and visually appealing food can improve our mood and even increase the enjoyment of a meal.
