  • 500g boxed fruity panettone (or try a chocolate version)
  • 500g can of mascarpone
  • Zest of 1 orange
  • 2 tbsp powdered sugar
  • Silver balls for decorating (optional)
  • Juice of 2 oranges, zest of 1
  • 2 tbsp powdered sugar
  • 1 tbsp Grand Marnier

Preparation steps

  1. Make the syrup first. Gently heat all the ingredients together until the sugar has dissolved, then cook for 1 minute or until the mixture has just thickened. Let cool down.
  2. Meanwhile, trim off the rounded top of the panettone (this is the cooking benefit for later!), then use a serrated knife to cut the rest into four horizontal slices.
  3. Mix together the mascarpone, orange peel and powdered sugar.
  4. Stack the slices, gradually drizzling a little orange syrup over each piece, and using about 2 tablespoons of mascarpone to bring each layer together.
  5. Once you’re done stacking, top with the rest of the mascarpone in a swirl – a spatula works best for this.
  6. Sprinkle with a few silver balls if desired, then serve immediately or chill for up to 2 hours and then sprinkle with the balls at the last minute.
