  11. Layer half the potatoes in a 1.5 liter/2¾ pint buttered ovenproof dish.
  12. Scatter half of the onions, bacon and cheese on top.
  13. Season lightly with salt and pepper.
  14. Repeat the layers.
  15. Pour cream evenly over it.
  16. Bake until golden brown, 10-12 minutes.
  17. Let rest for 5 minutes.
  18. Serve with a salad.
