Ingredients
- 22 slices unsmoked streaky bacon, 6 halved
- 16 Cumberland sausages
- 12 chipolatas
- 3 white onions, sliced
- 3 red onions, sliced
- 3 tbsp olive oil
- 5 tbsp whole grain mustard
- 5 tbsp tomato ketchup
- 5 tbsp dark muscovado sugar
- 2 tsp Worcestershire sauce
- soft rolls for serving
- Oven fries for serving (optional)
Tip
Cook it on the barbie
Cook the onions in the oven, but take the bacon-wrapped sausages outside. Grill them in the coolest part of the grill so they cook through without burning. Add the chipolatas when the Cumberlands are about halfway done.
Preparation steps
- Preheat oven to 200°C/180°C fan/gas 6.
- Wrap a full slice of bacon around each Cumberland sausage and half a slice of bacon around each chipolata. Spread on 1-2 large, flat baking sheets.
- In a large roasting tin, mix the sliced onions with the oil and then roast on the top shelf of the oven with the sausages underneath for 20 minutes.
- Mix mustard, ketchup, sugar and Worcestershire sauce with some spices.
- After 20 minutes, stir into the onions. Roast for another 10 minutes until sticky, then remove from oven and keep warm.
- The sausages should be cooked by now, but if they are not browned and crispy, drain the juices and grill until cooked to your liking.
- Divide the rolls and serve with the crispy bacon-wrapped sausages, sticky fried onions and oven fries, as desired.

Health benefits of hot dogs with sticky fried onions
Hot dogs with sticky fried onions may not sound like a healthy meal, but don’t dismiss them just yet. When prepared with the right ingredients and cooking techniques, this popular comfort food can provide several health benefits. Let’s take a closer look at the ingredients and how they contribute to a balanced diet:
1. Unsmoked streaky bacon
The bacon in this recipe provides a good amount of protein. Protein is essential for building and repairing tissue, supporting the immune system, and producing enzymes and hormones. However, bacon also contains a lot of saturated fat and should therefore be consumed in moderation.
2. Cumberland sausages and chipolatas
Both Cumberland sausages and chipolatas are sources of protein. They also provide vitamins and minerals such as iron, zinc and vitamin B12. However, keep in mind that sausages can be high in sodium. Therefore, it is best to choose leaner options and consume them in moderation.
3. White and red onions
Onions are packed with nutrients and offer numerous health benefits. They’re a great source of antioxidants, especially quercetin, which has been linked to reducing inflammation and supporting heart health. Additionally, onions are low in calories and high in fiber, which can aid digestion and promote a healthy weight.
4. Olive oil
Olive oil is a healthier alternative to traditional cooking oils. It contains heart-healthy monounsaturated fats and antioxidants. These properties may help reduce the risk of heart disease, lower bad cholesterol, and support overall well-being.
5. Whole grain mustard
Whole grain mustard adds both flavor and nutritional value to this dish. It is low in calories and fat but rich in vitamins, minerals and antioxidants. Consuming mustard in moderation can have positive effects on digestion, metabolism and maintaining a healthy weight.
6. Tomato ketchup
Tomato ketchup adds a spicy and sweet touch to hot dogs. Although tomato ketchup should be consumed in moderation due to its added sugar content, it is a source of lycopene, an antioxidant known to reduce the risk of certain cancers and support a healthy heart.
7. Dark Muscovado Sugar
Dark muscovado sugar gives the sticky fried onions their delicious caramelized flavor. However, it is important to remember that sugar should be consumed sparingly as part of a balanced diet.
8. Worcestershire sauce
Worcestershire sauce gives the dish a rich umami flavor. Although typically used in small quantities, it can add to the overall flavor experience. However, due to its high sodium content, it should be used in moderation, especially for those with high blood pressure.
By making minor changes to the cooking technique, such as: By grilling the sausages instead of frying them and using leaner pieces of bacon, you can make this dish even more healthful. Serving the hot dogs with whole-wheat buns and oven-baked French fries can also increase their nutritional value.
Remember that occasionally enjoying hot dogs with sticky fried onions can be part of a balanced diet. As with any food, moderation and mindful portion control are key to a healthy lifestyle.
