Ingredients

  • 140g self-raising flour
  • 140g wholemeal flour
  • 1 teaspoon Baking powder
  • 50g cold butter, cut into small cubes
  • 85g mature cheddar, grated
  • 1 egg
  • 1 tbsp Marmite
  • 2 tablespoons Greek or natural yogurt
  • 3 tablespoons milk, plus a little milk for glazing

Preparation steps

  1. Preheat the oven to 190°C/fan 170°C/gas 5.
  2. Mix the flour and baking powder in a mixing bowl, add a pinch of salt if desired.
  3. Add the butter and rub together with your fingertips until the mixture resembles fine breadcrumbs (or use a food processor).
  4. Stir in half of the cheese and form a well in the middle.
  5. Mix the remaining ingredients and pour into the well.
  6. Using a cutlery knife, knead the mixture into a soft but not sticky dough.
  7. If the dough is too dry, add a little more milk.
  8. Place on a floured work surface and roll out to about 2 cm thick.
  9. Using a round cutter, cut out 4 scones, collect the scraps and repeat until all the dough is used up.
  10. Place on a baking tray, brush with milk and sprinkle the remaining cheese on top.
  11. Bake until golden brown, 10-12 minutes.
  12. Cool on a wire rack.
